The Brisbane City Council has chosen the Brisbane Move consortium – comprised of ACCIONA and Arup – as the preferred tenderer to design and build the new Brisbane Metro, taking the massive project one step closer to beginning major construction works.
“We enjoy a very strong relationship with Brisbane City Council and look forward to continuing to deliver jobs and economic opportunities for Queensland,” ACCIONA Managing Director Bede Noonan said.
“Arup is extremely proud to help create a sustainable, city-shaping project that will provide greater movement, greater growth and create more jobs and investment opportunities for Brisbane,” Arup Queensland Leader Beth Woods said.
The major construction contract is anticipated to be finalised and formally awarded over the next few months.
This project will create thousands of jobs for the region and is expected to aid Queensland through its economic recovery from COVID-19.
“There are 2,600 jobs in play across the project and hundreds of supplier opportunities on the table so it’s great news that we are now working with the preferred tenderer to get moving on the next phase of this crucial Brisbane project.
“The coronavirus pandemic has devastated the local economy; we need construction projects to accelerate right now and today marks a line in the sand; Brisbane Metro is moving forward,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.
The $944 million new Brisbane Metro will provide a 21-kilometre turn-up-and-go service with two lines connecting 18 Metro stations from Eight Mile Plains to Roma Street and Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital to University of Queensland.
Key infrastructure to be delivered will include:
“Brisbane Metro is a critical project for Brisbane and will play a vital role in the city’s future transport infrastructure, further enhancing the liveability and connectivity of our city,” Queensland Major Contractors Association Chief Executive Jon Davies said.
In addition, a new fleet of 60 electric high-capacity Metro vehicles will also be built as part of the Brisbane Metro project. The vehicles will be able to accommodate up to 150 passengers in comfort and about 180 passengers on event mode.
Service on the new Brisbane Metro is anticipated to commence by the end of 2023.
