The NorthernPathways consortium – comprising of John Holland, Serco Australia, John Laing and Macquarie Capital – has been named as the preferred builder to deliver the New Grafton Correctional Centre (NGCC) in New South Wales.
“We are looking forward to working with the people and businesses, as well as community and not-for-profit organizations, in and around Grafton to build and operate this unique centre as part of the community,” said Serco Australia Chief Executive Officer Mark Irwin.
NGCC is a state-of-the-art, modern correctional facility which plays a vital role in the State justice system that serves the northern part of NSW. The facility will be the key correctional complex for all corrections operations from the Queensland border in the north as well as Kempsey in the south-east and Tamworth in the south-west.
NGCC will feature individual facilities that will hold three different categories of inmates safely, securely and fully separated from each other. The centre will include a 1,000-bed male maximum security facility as well as a 300-bed female maximum security facility and a 400-bed male minimum security facility.
“Our goal is to shape the pathway of every inmate in our care to give them the best chance at becoming responsible citizens again. We will do this in a humane and decent setting, where inmates will undertake inclusive rehabilitation and reintegration programs, vocational education and training focused on in-demand skills to prepare them for real work. We are privileged to be afforded this opportunity and are committed to make a positive difference through our new work at the New Grafton Correctional Centre,” Mr Irwin said.
This project is expected to create up to 1,100 construction jobs and 600 operational positions as well as inject approximately $560 million into the local economy over the next two decades.
Construction is set to begin in mid-2017 and is expected to be completed in 2020.
