A joint venture between WBHO Infrastructure and SRG Civil has been awarded a $22.8 million contract to complete the Margaret River Perimeter Road in Western Australia.

The joint venture will be building Stage 2 of the Perimeter Road project, connecting it to the 1.8 kilometre section that was completed in 2015.

Stage 2 of the project will include a further 5.3-kilometre of the Perimeter Road as well as a new 2.3-kilometre section of John Archibald Drive which will complete a connection between the Perimeter Road and the town.

The project will also include a 96-metre three-span bridge over the Margaret River and a pedestrian bridge on the Darch trail – as suggested by the project’s Community Reference Group – that will connect to the existing bike and walk trails.

The Margaret River Perimeter Road will be taking the majority of heavy vehicles out of town, reducing congestion on the main street and improving safety in the town. The project will also create a high-standard, free-flowing route for inter-regional traffic by removing the need to travel through the town.

“The Perimeter Road will take the majority of heavy vehicle and inter-regional traffic off the main street of Margaret River, allowing visitors and locals to enjoy increased safety and amenity in the town centre.

“Reduced travel times to other regional destinations and increased transport efficiency will provide economic benefits, including allowing producers to get their goods to market quicker,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

Various sustainability initiatives have been planned, which includes the materials to be used such as mulch, topsoil and feature rock for landscaping as well as manufacture of rock products to be used as protection of bridge embankments, drain structures and table drains.

Construction of Margaret River Perimeter Road Stage 2 is set to commence in September 2017 and completed by late 2018. The project is expected to create up to 100 jobs during construction.
