Preferred contractor announced to deliver SA's $80m City Tram Extension

The major contract to deliver the $80 million City Tram Extension Project in South Australia has been awarded to the Downer EDI and York Civil joint venture, with works to commence in the coming weekend.

This project will be delivering four new stops which includes one on King William Road – servicing the Festival Plaza precinct – and three new stops along North Terrace – servicing the library and museum precinct, universities and the East End.

“We’re building a bigger tram network which will cater for thousands more passengers travelling around our city.

“This $80 million investment will kick start the first stage of our ambitious tram expansion project that will connect north, south, east and west, easing city congestion and reducing our carbon footprint.

“It is also an investment in South Australian jobs – we are ensuring as many local jobs and contractors as possible are utilised during the project with 90% of all labour hours to be undertaken by South Australians,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said.

As part of the project, the King William Road/North Terrace intersection will have a major rebuild as well as provide additional turning movements for tram services to accommodate future tram network extensions.

The project will also be extending the tram track along King William Road a further 100 metres north from the original proposed plan, resulting in an improved and safe disability access and enhanced pedestrian link between Anzac Walk and the Riverbank Precinct.

Major works on the King Williams Road/North Terrace intersection has been scheduled to begin in early January 2018, with the entire project to be completed early next year.
