Procurement for the Sunshine Station Superhub project is now underway

Construction to transform Sunshine Station into a superhub is a step closer to commencing as procurement gets underway.

The Sunshine Station Superhub is being delivered as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail development – also known as Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Airport.

This complex program of works, which spans six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion, will be divided into five packages and each package will deliver a specific aspect of the works. The packages include enabling works, freight line works, metropolitan line works, regional line works and the Albion Station redevelopment.

Initial packages will be delivered using the Level Crossing Removal Project’s successful program alliance model.

The first package to be awarded in early 2026 will be the enabling works package. It will include the diversion, relocation and protection of utilities and underground services needed for major construction to be carried out on the rest of the project.

The remaining work packages will follow progressively.

The regional line works package will be open to market. This will have a new alliance formed to undertake the works, while the other packages will be delivered by existing program alliance teams.

Involvement of existing alliances mean work can get underway sooner and the project team can utilise their extensive experience working across the rail network on level crossing removals as well as network improvement projects.

This program of works will ensure Sunshine Station can support more than 40 train services per hour, with increased capacity to cater for additional services for the growing west and to the airport.

Design and planning work is well underway. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026 and be completed in 2030. The project is estimated to support 1,200 jobs throughout the delivery phase.

The overall Sunshine Station Superhub project will deliver:

  • Two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station
  • Three new rail bridges
  • New and upgraded tracks
  • New signalling technology
  • Realigned passenger and freight lines

This project will also deliver a new modern Albion Station that will feature an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs. Further design development as well as community engagement will be undertaken to shape the details of the new station.
