A much-needed upgrade on another section of the Princes Highway in New South Wales will soon get underway and locals are invited to have their say on the project that will improve safety and reliability on the first six kilometres of the upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road.

Upgrading the six-kilometre section between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road has been deemed a priority project and the Australian Government has invested $400 million towards its delivery while the New South Wales Government commits $100 million.

“This joint investment towards improvements along the Princes Highway in New South Wales will unlock benefits for local communities, freight and tourism, delivering safer, more reliable and efficient trips,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said.

The upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road will deliver safer, more reliable journeys on the South Coast and this project is part of the broader $1.9 billion Princes Highway Upgrade program that aims to improve this key corridor.

“We know that the upgrade of the whole 20-kilometre section of the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road is a priority for the community, but we are taking it section by section.

“We’ve confirmed that Stage 1 will follow the strategic corridor we displayed late last year so now we’re pushing ahead with consultation and environmental studies to minimise impacts and finalise the location and features of this priority section,” NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said.

According to Senator for New South Wales Perin Davey, engaging with and involving the community during this stage of the development made sense.

“Undertaking a consultation process on the Jervis Bay Road to Sussex Inlet Road program is important, because it helps us deliver a better quality of road, and just as importantly – it demonstrates that we respect the views of people in the local community,” the Senator said.

This priority upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road will help improve safety for all motorists as well as boost traffic and freight efficiency. This project will also connect to an upgraded Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection to the north.

Feedback gathered from the community will help shape the environmental assessment and concept design for this significant project and get construction to begin sooner.

Consultation will run until the 19th December and the community can give their feedback on public and active transport options as well as the project’s impact on social and economic activity in Falls Creek, Tomerong and surrounding communities.

“The proposed upgrade will address safety concerns, improve traffic and freight efficiency and build on the planned Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade project to the north.

“There are key areas where the community is encouraged to share their views, such as public and active transport options and how the highway upgrade can support the social and economic activity of the surrounding area,” State Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said.
