QLD Government cutting red tape for the construction industry

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and the Palaszczuk Government have announced that businesses will no longer have to apply for permits to move cranes or special purpose vehicles on state-controlled roads.  

Businesses can now be granted pre-approved road access for special purpose vehicles. 

Under the old process, businesses had to wait as long as 28 days for a permit to move a mobile crane or a concrete pump which is a massive disruption to productivity. 

The Notice was developed by NHRV in collaboration with the Australian Local Government Association, State Road Authorities, the Crane Industry Council of Australia and the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia.

The NHRV estimates the Notice will remove approximately 1,600 permits annually in QLD alone and that 98% of the productivity gains will be related to decreased vehicle downtime and reduced admin costs. 

Operators that meet the strict standards will now have greater access certainty on construction sites. The development, which will support jobs and improve the productivity and efficiency of the industry, has been well received. 

The Notice will benefit the wider community as well as the construction industry, with NHRV estimating that over the next 20 years, $130m in costs that would otherwise flow on to all Australians will be eliminated. 

It is expected to progressively become a reference document for the operation of more than 1,200 mobile cranes currently operating in QLD and more than 3,000 mobile cranes currently operating in participating jurisdictions.
