QLD Sugar Rd & Mooloolaba Rd intersection upgrade now underway

Monica Gameng   |   November 24, 2025

Construction is now underway on the much-awaited Sugar Road, Mooloolaba Road intersection upgrade, between Syd Lingard Drive and Tantula Road West in Queensland.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its election commitment and plan for Queensland’s future with these improvements to help address congestion as well as boost safety and enhance connections to key Sunshine Coast destinations.

The refined scope and design for the intersection upgrade includes:

  • Constructing modified right-turn lanes east bound on Mooloolaba Road overpass
  • Constructing two dedicated left-turn lanes from Sugar Road to Mooloolaba Road
  • Road widening to provide more lanes westbound from Sugar Road
  • Installing signalised pedestrian crossings
  • Realigning the slip lane on the motorway southbound exit ramp intersection
  • Providing dedicated on-road bike lanes and off-road paths
  • Installing improved lighting

“As both the Minister for Transport and Main Roads and the Member for Buderim, I know how important this upgrade is to our community. I’ve been fighting to get these upgrades delivered since before I was elected in 2017 and now, as a part of the Crisafulli Government, I’m proud to deliver on our commitment to get this done.

“The former Labor Government acknowledged that this stretch of road was congested and that it had a “high crash rate”, but despite promising for work to start in mid-2022, the project was shelved.

“Now under a Crisafulli Government focussed on delivering for all Queenslanders, work on these improvements has started and when finished, they will make a real difference for the 20,000 motorists who travel through this busy section of our road network.

“This upgrade is about delivering practical improvements that reflect what our growing community needs and deserves and is part of our broader commitment to deliver better roads and infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast, ensuring we’re well-equipped to meet the demands of the 2032 Games and beyond.

“For far too long the Sunshine Coast has missed out on the roads and rail infrastructure necessary to support our rapidly growing population. The Crisafulli Government is focussed on building the generational infrastructure the Sunshine Coast needs, with record investment in The Wave, the Mooloolah River Interchange, and now we’re getting on with the job of upgrading the Sugar Road, Mooloolaba Road Intersection,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said.

This project was designed to improve traffic flow and reduce delays, congestion, and queuing in the area.

These works will also boost operations of the Mooloolaba Road bridge over the Sunshine Motorway, helping address current traffic challenges while supporting future plans for more comprehensive upgrades.
