QLD Government invests $11m into Caboolture Hospital upgrade

In order to keep up with regional growth, the Palaszczuk Government is investing more than $11 million to the $17 million Caboolture Hospital upgrade for this year.

On Tuesday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk together with Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick visited the Caboolture Hospital to kick off the final stages of construction for a new 32-bed inpatient ward for adults.

Included in the 2016-17 Budget are $7.1 million to develop a ward for the Metro North Hospital and Health Service, as well as up to $4 million to create over 300 car parks which will help ease the access to the hospital.

According to the Premier, the Palaszczuk Government is committed to ensure that Queenslanders have access to quality and modern health facilities wherever they may live which includes Caboolture – a fast growing area in South-East QLD.

“Combining this infrastructure upgrade with an injection of more clinical staff where they are needed most in this hospital means Caboolture residents can be confident they are receiving the best health care possible without leaving home.” – Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk

Last week, the first stage of construction for the new ward was completed. This included the establishment of a new Executive Centre which is used for the relocation of hospital support staff and IT infrastructure. The final stage of construction is set to commence in a few days.

At least 40 construction jobs – both directly and indirectly – will be created in the next couple of months to finish the ward by early 2017 according to the Premier.

Minister Cameron Dick said that the emptied space will be transformed to become the new ward. Once the ward is completed, it will be covering a number of adult health care specialties, including cardiac and coronary care, and general medicine.

After the announcement of the $4 million investment for the car park, the final stages of construction began. An influx of midwives and nursing graduates, as well as interns also joined the hospital. Minister Dick also said that the Caboolture Hospital is just one of a number of health facilities that the Palaszczuk Government is committed to revamp in the state.

“Our $230 million Advancing Queensland Health Infrastructure program will deliver enhanced built infrastructure at Atherton, Nambour, and on Thursday Island.

And as announced by the Treasurer, the Government will go to the market for a multi-story carpark in Rockhampton by December.” – Minister Cameron Dick

Below are other capital investment programs included on the 2016-17 Budget targeting health:

  • $167 million to complete the delivery of the $1.872 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute
  • Continued delivery of the $180 million Enhancing Regional Hospitals Program for upgrades at the Hervey Bay and Gladstone Emergency Departments, Caloundra Health Service, and Roma Hospital
  • $12.7 million (of the $13.6 million) for the Integrated Community Health Centre in Wynnum
