Sections of the Cunningham Highway that have been long-neglected will be fixed as part of the Crisafulli Government’s plan for Queensland’s future.
The vital freight and regional route between Tregony and Gladfield will finally be receiving long-term rehabilitation by rebuilding deteriorated road surfaces and improving safety to make it safer, smoother, and more reliable for Queenslanders now and into the future.
The rehabilitation of Cunningham Highway will be delivered in stages, with priority given to the most damaged sections. This is the result of extensive assessments of the highway’s condition after heavy traffic and extreme weather left drivers with rough surfaces, reduced speed limits, and ongoing safety concerns.
“For years, Queenslanders were left to deal with crumbling roads and temporary repairs.
“The Crisafulli Government is stepping up to properly rebuild the Cunningham Highway and make it safer for locals, freight operators, and anyone travelling through the region.
“This highway matters to the economy and to everyday Queenslanders, and we’re delivering the long-term solutions Labor failed to provide,” Minister for Transport and Main Road Brent Mickelberg said.
Early works are now underway on the most deteriorated section between Tregony and Gladfield. Major rehabilitation works are scheduled to begin later this year, and works will be rolled out progressively to restore the highway and build resilience into one of the State’s most important transport corridors.
The upgrades will make the highway safer for locals, freight operators, as well as travellers throughout the region.
The Cunningham Highway is a critical link for regional communities and freight, and the State Government is backing it with real funding and a clear plan for a safer future for Queenslanders.
“I thank the Crisafulli Government and Minister Brent Mickelberg for visiting the region, seeing the state of our roads firsthand, and then moving quickly to address long-neglected sections.
“These works are genuine long-term repairs, not patch-ups.
“The upgrades will fix the underlying drainage and stability issues, as well as cut down on the vehicle damage we’ve all been dealing with because of the deteriorated road surface,” Member of Southern Downs James Lister said.
Major works to upgrade Bremer River Bridge on the Warrego Highway in Queensland are now underway alongside the unveiling of a rehabilitation plan.
