The Victorian Government has released to market the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the $518 million Ballarat Line Upgrade project.

“It’s the biggest rail project in regional Victoria, and we want the best in business to build it,” said Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.

The half-a-billion dollar upgrade project will include:

  • Duplicating 17-kilometres of track between Melton and Deer Park
  • Replacing the car park at Rockbank Station
  • Additional platforms at Bacchus Marsh and Ballan stations and extending the platforms at Rockbank station with new pedestrian links between platforms
  • New stabling facilities at Melton and Rowsley, and the removal of stabling facilities at Bacchus Marsh
  • A five-kilometre passing loop at Ballan
  • A four-kilometre passing loop at Spreadeagle which will make it possible to close the existing Bungaree loop and remove five level crossings
  • Duplication of three-kilometres of track east of Warrenheip Junction

“This half-a-billion dollar project will give the people of Ballarat, Melton and Melbourne’s west the services they deserve – with space for more trains, more often,” said Ms Allan.

Approximately 200 geotechnical investigations on the Ballarat Line Upgrade will be carried out, with investigations already underway in Ballan as well as between Caroline Springs and Rockbank.

These investigations – which will continue over the coming months – will provide critical information about ground conditions along the Ballarat Line, which will help in determining how the project should be designed and built.

Major construction on the Ballarat Line Upgrade project is expected to begin early in 2018 and completed by late 2019.
