Construction has commenced on the SEC Delburn Wind Farm near the Latrobe Valley, with about 40 workers already on site to carry out early works including nine local trainees and apprentices.
This is Victoria’s first publicly owned wind farm. The State Electricity Commission (SEC) is delivering this project alongside delivery partners OSMI Australia, Vestas, and Traralgon-based Delta Group.
“Labor’s SEC is delivering publicly owned renewable energy creating local jobs and powering local public services.
“The Liberals did everything they could to destroy the SEC yet again, but our local energy and jobs plan is delivering for Latrobe Valley and Victoria,” Minister for State Electricity Commission Lily D’Ambrosio said.
Early works will focus on site establishment, construction of compounds and facilities, access road development, plantation tree clearing and mulching, and early-stage earthworks. This stage of the project will also install five 130,000-litre firefighting water tanks.
SEC Delburn Wind Farm will have 33 wind turbines with a generation capacity of up to 205MW, which is enough to power more than 130,000 homes once it is operational in 2028. This renewable energy development will also provide over $22 million in neighbour and community benefits over its lifetime.
This project will also generate up to 300 jobs at peak construction period, bringing the total statewide SEC jobs created to almost 2,000 since the SEC was established.
The wind farm will support the SEC to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to power Victoria’s public services, schools, hospitals, police stations, trains and more – including local sites such as Sale College, the Morwell Polic Station, the CFA, and Latrobe Regional Hospital.
“Delburn Wind Farm is creating opportunities for local workers and businesses, while delivering long-term benefits for communities across Gippsland.
“Labor is delivering well-paid skilled jobs for the Latrobe Valley,” Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh said.
“SEC is moving at pace to deliver the next generation of energy infrastructure supporting jobs and building the workforce needed to achieve 4.5 gigawatts of renewable energy and storage by 2035,” SEC Executive General Manager Assets Lane Crockett said.
