CIMIC Group company Sedgman will expand its scope of works at the Byerwen coal project in central Queensland following the award of a new contract for the design and construction of a tailings dewatering facility.

The facility will aim to reduce operational risks and power usage as well as improve water recovery and management of dewatering chemicals at the mine.

“We are pleased to continue our long-standing relationships with QCoal to deliver safe and efficient solutions for the industry,” CIMIC Group Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Office Juan Santamaria said.

“We are pleased to continue working with QCoal with a key focus on reducing impacts and undertaking environmentally responsible practices. The tailings dewatering contract at Byerwen is a great opportunity to achieve joint goals in ESG, an important focus for the industry,” Sedgman Managing Director Grant Fraser said.

Sedgman will commence works this month, with completion expected by mid-2022.

The Byerwen coal project is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 20 kilometres west of Glenden. Mining operations at Byerwen is already underway and construction has been completed on the Stage 1 Coal Handling and Preparation Plant – which was also delivered by Sedgman.

The mine is anticipated to produce up to 10 million tonnes of hard coking coal annually. Coal from the mine is transported to Abbot Point Coal Terminal for export.

The Byerwen coal project is expected to support up to 500 jobs once it is fully operational.
