Shortlisted tenderers announced for WA Bayswater Station Upgrade

Western Australia’s METRONET Bayswater Station Upgrade has reached a new milestone with the announcement of two shortlisted proponents to design and build the project.

Better Bayswater Alliance - comprised of Georgiou Group and Lendlease - and Evolve Bayswater Alliance - comprised of Coleman Rail and Decmil - will now proceed to the competitive phase of the project, with the contract anticipated to be awarded in the coming months.

“We’re now moving into the next stage of procurement for the Bayswater Station upgrade, which will create a major vibrant transport hub, linking two new METRONET lines.

“The new METRONET Bayswater Station will become a major hub of our world-class rail network, with connections to the Forrestfield-Airport Link and Morley-Ellenbrook Line,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

The winning bidder will undertake the design and construction of the station as well as a new King William Street/Coode Street bridge whilst minimising the impacts to the operations on the Midland Line.

The builder will also deliver track, signalling, civil, drainage and overhead line works together with the construction of retaining walls, electrical works, communications and control systems, and public spaces.

The Bayswater Station Upgrade is the first stage of works on the Morley-Ellenbrook Line development, and project scope will include:

• Whatley Crescent-Beechboro Road South connection under the railway
• Hamilton Street public space that follows the area’s natural geography for pedestrian connections from a lowered Whatley Crescent to Hamilton Street
• Removing Coode Street-Railway Parade signalised intersection
• Reconfiguring the King William Street-Whatley Crescent intersection to introduce pedestrian priorities and improve vehicle movements
• Whatley Crescent-Hamilton Street remodelled so that the eastern end of Whatley Crescent and Hamilton Street would become directly connected and the area is only accessed by local resident
• Reducing Whatley Crescent to two lanes in each direction through the town centre
• Two station entrances to reduce passengers crossing roads and provide alternative emergency exits
• Integrated bus services with the local road network without requiring buses to turn in residential streets or operate from a large bus interchange within the town centre

Other works as part of this upgrade are also underway, including additional parking spaces at Meltham and Ashfield stations to compensate for the reduced number of parking spaces at Bayswater Station; and other forward works will begin before the end of the year.

The tender for the Tonkin Highway ‘Gap’ Project is already out to market and some works covered by this project will facilitate the linking of the Morley-Ellenbrook Line to Bayswater Station.

“With multiple METRONET projects on track, it’s an incredible time for the public transport industry in WA, as we see our future network constructed,” Ms Saffioti said.

Construction on the Bayswater Station Upgrade is anticipated to commence by the end of the year.
