Spiecapag Australia to build QLD section of $800m Northern Gas Pipeline

Spiecapag Australia has been appointed by Jemena to build the Queensland portion of the $800 million Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) project.

According to NGP Project Director Jonathan Spink, Spiecapag Australia will be building approximately 141 kilometres of the pipeline starting from east of the Queensland border up to the pipeline’s end point at Mount Isa.

With this contract award, Jemena has appointed partners to construct the full length of the NGP. Earlier this month, McConnell Dowell was also appointed to build approximately 481 kilometres of the 633-kilometre pipeline.

“Spiecapag Australia are seasoned pipeline constructors who demonstrated great skill and capability throughout the tender process.

“They are also well equipped to respond to the unique terrain the pipeline will cross in Queensland, and have a reputation of working collaboratively and closely with local communities,” Mr Spink said.

Mr Spink also said that Jemena has already secured various approvals – including pipeline license and consent to build from the Northern Territory Government – which allows the company to commence construction this 2017.

“We anticipate commencing construction of the NGP in the Territory in the coming weeks, with around 200 kilometres to be built this year.

“Now that we have appointed a construction partner for the Queensland end of the pipeline we will also look closely at our project plan, with a view to commencing construction there as soon as practicable,” Mr Spink said.

The Northern Gas Pipeline is expected to be commissioned in late 2018.
