Construction on a new bridge across the Mongarlowe River in Charleyong, New South Wales is set to go underway with the tender to replace the old Charleyong Bridge awarded to SRG Civil.
Once constructed, the new $18.5 million Charleyong Bridge will help increase safety for the local community as well as improve freight access along the route.
“The new bridge will be safer than the structure it replaces, with a 100 kilometre-an-hour speed limit and wider design making it suitable for vehicles with a higher load limit,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said.
The Charleyong Bridge - located north of Braidwood on Main Road 92 - has been a vital route for freight carrying goods, quarried material and stock between Nowra, Braidwood and Canberra.
“This is a vital connection for local industries and this upgrade will keep traffic moving at all times of the year, which is a really positive outcome for our economy,” NSW Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro John Barilaro said.
This multi-million dollar project will include:
Construction of a new bridge upstream of the existing bridge on improved alignment
Construction of a 1-kilometre sealed approach roads
Removal of tight unsealed curves
Approach to tie in with Nerriga Road immediately west of Tomboye Road intersection
Removal of the existing bridge
Early works have already commenced in July on road approaches to the bridge, with the works being delivered by the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
“The new bridge will provide access for higher mass limit vehicles meaning less trucks on the road ensuring easier, faster and safer journeys for all road users,” NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said.
The entire project - including the upgrading of road approaches and other works - is valued at approximately $23 million, with the Australian Government investing $5 million towards the project under the Bridges Renewal Program and the remaining $18 million has been provided by the State Government.
Weather permitting, the new Charleyong Bridge is expected to open in 2020.
