Stage 1 of The Wave is progressing well with the award of three work contracts

Delivery of the transformative The Wave is progressing and on track, with the Australian and Queensland Governments awarding design and pre-construction contracts for Stage 1 works.

The first stage of The Wave will deliver 19 kilometres of new dual-track rail between Beerwah and Caloundra, with two construction packages and a signalling contract:

• Beerwah Coast Connect – a consortium of Georgiou, Hatch and Laing O’Rourke has been awarded the contract for design and pre-construction works across existing sites in Beerwah and surrounding areas (brownfield works)
• CoastalTraX – a consortium of Acciona and Georgiou will deliver design and pre-construction works across undeveloped land (greenfield works), connecting with the brownfield package east of Steve Irwin Way through to Caloundra
• Alstom and UGL has been awarded the contract to deliver the European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling solution

“The Wave Stage 1 is another example of the Australian and Queensland Governments working collaboratively to deliver the infrastructure Australia needs.

“This project will create jobs, boost economic growth and improve connectivity for Sunshine Coast communities and businesses,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.

“This milestone demonstrates our commitment to delivering the infrastructure Queensland needs.

“Stage 1 is just the beginning – The Wave will connect people to jobs, education and essential services, now and into the future,” QLD Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said.

The Wave is part of Queensland’s 2032 Delivery Plan and it will underpin the largest ever infrastructure investment on the Sunshine Coast.

Stage 1 will deliver 19 kilometres of new dual-track rail line between Beerwah and Caloundra, new stations at Aura (Bells Creek) and Caloundra, and upgrades to Beerwah Station.

Over the next 12 months, the Queensland Government will work closely with Beerwah Coast Connect and CoastalTraX to refine detailed designs for the project, with works including ongoing site investigations and further community consultation on station precincts – which will begin later this year.

Overall, The Wave development will deliver a heavy passenger rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya that will connect with a metro-style service to allow journeys to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD.

The Wave is divided into three major projects, namely:

• The Wave Stage 1 and 2 (Rail) – a heavy passenger rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya
• The Wave Stage 3 (Metro) – a high-frequency, high-capacity metro=style service from Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport
• Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade

The Wave – Stage 1 is estimated to cost between $5.5 billion and $7 billion. To date, the Australian and Queensland Governments have committed $2.75 billion each to get Stage 1 works underway.

“The Wave will be a game changer for Sunshine Coast locals and will help provide a real alternative to sitting on the Bruce when they’re travelling to Brisbane,” QLD Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said.

“The Albanese Government is proudly committing $2.75 billion towards Stage 1 of The Wave to help deliver a train line in the booming growth corridor from Beerwah to Caloundra,” Senator for Queensland Corrine Mulholland said.

“The southern end of the Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in the state – delivering two new stations at the heart of that growth is recognition of our commitment to delivering the roads and infrastructure our community needs,” State Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said.
