Seymour Whyte Constructions has been appointed as the preferred contractor to deliver works on the $30 million Swan Street Bridge Upgrade project in Victoria.

Upgrade works will include:

  • Construction of an additional lane in the eastbound direction of Swan Street Bridge and Olympic Boulevard, making it a five-lane traffic
  • Two new four-metre wide separated cycling and pedestrian path on both sides of Swan Street Bridge
  • A new pedestrian crossing on the Alexandra Avenue side of Swan Street Bridge

"We're putting people first by removing this notorious bottleneck by adding an extra lane for drivers heading across to Richmond," said Acting Premier James Merlino.

This vital upgrade will help remove the notorious bottleneck on Swan Street Bridge and reduce travel times by five minutes for over 30,000 vehicles that use the bridge each day. The upgrade will also improve reliability as well as increase safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

"Upgrading the Swan Street Bridge will make the journey faster, more reliable and safer for all motorists," said Acting Minister for Roads and Road Safety Philip Dalidakis.

The design of the bridge draws inspiration from Melbourne’s iconic Arts Centre as well as from the rowers who regularly make their way up and down the Yarra River. Community participation played an important part during the design phase of the project.

"Travelling to and from the Australian Open next year, the upgraded Swan Street Bridge will provide motorists and pedestrians with a seamless journey to the sports and entertainment precinct," Mr Merlino said.

Works are set to commence after the Moomba Festival, with completion expected by the end of 2017.
