The Bankstown Line Upgrade between Sydenham and Bankstown - as part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project - has now been given the go ahead for development.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Transport and infrastructure Andrew Constance has confirmed that planning approval for the Bankstown Line Upgrade has been granted following local community and council consultations.

“This is great news for this part of Sydney and we are ready to hit the ground running.

“Construction of the Sydney Metro through the city is well underway which will link to the South West and we have started the track work at Sydenham. We are meeting every milestone to get this Metro project up and running in 2024,” Premier Berejiklian said.

Major construction on the railway is now underway at Sydenham to convert the Bankstown Line to modern metro rail standards.

The Bankstown Line Upgrade will bring:

  • Air-conditioned metro trains with increased train frequency during peak times

  • Improved CCTV surveillance, platform screen doors, platform levels with train floors, minimal gaps between platforms and trains

  • Improved station interchange facilities at key stations

  • All trains stopping at local stations

  • Safe and efficient connections during peak and non-peak periods between key centres along the T3 Bankstown Line

  • New, direct and fast services to Martin Place, Barangaroo, North Sydney, Chatswood and Macquarie Park

  • Interchanges to other rail services at Sydenham, Central and Martin Place

  • Turn up and go train services - no need for a timetable

  • More job opportunities with faster, more frequent and direct access to key employment centres, including North Sydney, Chatswood, Macquarie Park and the north west

  • Better access to education, with fast, more frequent and direct connections

  • All stations fully accessible, with lifts and level access between trains and platforms

  • Fast, safe and reliable trains with a new generation metro trains

Once completed, this upgrade will have improved the region’s largest rail bottleneck situations. Metro trains will be running at least every four minutes during peak times from Bankstown.
