Tenders out to market for bridge upgrades across TAS

Tenders have been released to market for works to strengthen six bridges across Tasmania as part of the Freight Access Bridge Upgrade Program - a $19 million statewide program that aims to strengthen a number of bridges on key freight routes that connect to ports, transport hubs and major industries.

“The Freight Access bridge Upgrade Program was developed together with industry and local government stakeholders to support the movement of freight around the state, ensuring our economy can continue to develop and grow,” Minister for Infrastructure Jeremy Rockliff said in a statement.

The six bridges to be upgraded in the next round of works include Bridport Road’s Pipers River bridge crossing Pipers Brook and Little Forester River flood opening in State’s north east together with Humphrey Rivulet bridge and Berriedale rail underpass on Brooker Highway; North West Bay River bridge near Sandfly; and Leslie Road underpass at Leslie Vale on Huon Highway in the State’s southern region.

Construction on these six bridges is anticipated to commence later this year.

Currently, a number of bridges on Bass Highway have been upgraded including Oakleigh rail underpass at Burnie, Emu River bridge at Wivenhoe, two Formby Road underpasses at Devonport, Lovett Street underpass at Ulverstone and Meander Valley Road underpass at Travellers Rest.

Upgrades are also nearly complete on the Mount Pleasant Interchange underpass on the Midland Highway near Launceston.

The Freight Access Bridge Upgrade Program is supported by a $1.6 billion investment from the 2019-20 State Budget that will deliver growth and job-creating infrastructure that the State needs.
