The Victorian Government has invested more than $22 million in train station, bus and other public transport infrastructure upgrades across regional Victoria and tenders have been released to market.

“This program will deliver the day-to-day upgrades that make a real difference – more parking at the local station, a secure place to lock your bike and better bus shelters so you’re not waiting in the rain,” said Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan

The Road and Rail Minor Works Program will be delivering new car parks as well as more comfortable waiting areas and better passenger information at train stations across the State’s regional and rural areas.

The program will also be improving cycling infrastructure at stations by adding new secure bike cages and hoops, making it easier to ride to the station and catch the train.

Upgrades to bus stops, signage and access as well as coach and bus interchanges will be included in the multi-million dollar program.

This program was included in 2016’s Victoria Budget and it is the product of extensive community consultation during the development of the Regional Network Development Plan (RNDP) – the State’s first short, medium and long-term strategy for better regional public transport.

“They’re local projects that have come out of the extensive consultation with local communities through the Regional Network Development Plan – Victoria’s first ever long term strategy for better regional public transport,” the Minister said.

Contracts for the program are expected to be awarded by the end of April 2017 and construction to begin by late-2017, with completion set by the end of 2018.

“These works will take place in five regions across 25 cities and towns in Victoria. I encourage local builders and contractors to apply through the tender process, and help us build a better public transport system,” Ms Allan said.
