Thiess – a CIMIC Group company – has secured a new five-year contract extension valued at $2.5 billion from Jellinbah Group for mining services at the Lake Vermont Coal Mine in Queensland.

Under this contract extension, Thiess will continue providing full-service mining works which will include mine planning, coal mining, topsoil overburden removal, drilling and blast, water management and rehabilitation of final landforms.

The CIMIC company will also provide all mobile plant and equipment as well as be a statutory operator for the project and operate and maintain the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP).

In addition, Thiess will provide a range of autonomous services at the Lake Vermont mine. This includes implementation of autonomous drilling and semi-autonomous dozer push.

“For more than 13 years, Thiess has worked alongside Jellinbah Group to safely position the mine’s operations for optimal efficiency, productivity and cost performance. This contract demonstrates Thiess’ ability to turn insight and optimisation into greater certainty for its clients,” CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Juan Santamaria said.

“We’ve developed a strong working relationship with Jellinbah Group since commencing work at Lake Vermont in 2007. We’re excited to bring fresh thinking and new solutions to support the mine’s continued, sustainable evolution over the next five years,” CIMIC Group Executive Mining and Mineral Processing and Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said.

Execution of the contract extension will commence from 1 January 2022.

Sedgman – CIMIC Group’s mineral processing company – is also providing CHPP operations support at the Lake Vermont Coal Mine.

The Lake Vermont Coal Mine is located approximately 20 kilometres north of Dysart and it produces two coal products – hard coking coal and pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal.
