BHP has awarded a $1.2 billion contract to CIMIC Group company Thiess for mining services at the Mt Arthur Coal mine in New South WalesHunter Valley.

The five-year contract builds on Thiess’ existing agreement with BHP and it also expands the company’s operations to include additional services to Mt Arthur’s southern end - the Ayredale and Roxburgh pits - as mine operator.

Thiess’ scope of works under this new contract will include design, planning and scheduling works as well as drill and blast, overburden removal and coal mining at the Mt Arthur operations.

“We have a proud history in the region and working with BHP. We’re pleased to continue our work at Mt Arthur Coal’s southern operations and support local jobs, suppliers and businesses.

“We look forward to contributing to the success of the Mt Arthur Coal operation,” Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said.

Approximately 300 permanent, locally-based positions are going to be supported by the works under this contract.

Earlier this year, Thiess was also awarded a $185 million contract for additional mining services at the Mt Arthur Coal operations.
