A new Metro railway line that links to the future Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is a step closer to being built with the announcement of two contractors shortlisted to deliver a major component of the project.

The two builders shortlisted for the Surface and Civil Alignment Works contract are:

  • CPB Contractors Pty Ltd
  • Acciona Construction Australia Pty Ltd

The winning tenderer will deliver over 10-kilometres of viaducts, bridges and embankments which will be used to support railway tracks as well as associated infrastructure for Sydney Metro.

The contract is anticipated to be awarded in the first quarter of 2022.

Approximately 14,000 jobs are expected to be supported through this project, including up to 250 apprentices.

“This contract will employ a range of civil engineering trades and specialist services including drainage and ground workers, steel-fixers and concrete workers, earthmoving plant operators, truck drivers, piling contractors, crane operators, general labourers, pre-cast operators, surveillance officers and security guards,” Sydney Metro said in a statement.

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project will deliver a 23-kilometre new railway that links residential areas with job hubs such as the upcoming Aerotropolis. This new railway will also connect travellers to the rest of Sydney's public transport system from the airport.

This massive rail development will also deliver six new stations, including:

  • St Marys, interchanging with the existing suburban railway station and connecting customers with the rest of Sydney's rail system
  • Orchard Hills, to service a future commercial and mixed-use precinct
  • Luddenham, to service a future education, innovation and commercial precinct
  • Two stations within the airport site, at the airport terminal and at the airport business park
  • The commercial heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis (the area proposed to be named Bradfield)
