Two more dangerous level crossings at Edithvale and Bonbeach in Victoria are set to be removed as part of the $2 billion investment for the Frankston Line Upgrade that will remove 13 level crossings and deliver 10 new stations.
The two level crossing are going to be removed using a trench which will help minimise any impacts of the upgrade to the environment as well as help in managing groundwater flows during the construction phase - as presented by the Level Crossing Removal Authority through an Environment Effect Statement (EES).
With the trench, any threats posed to the Ramsar-listed Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands are going to be minimised if not removed altogether.
With continued and careful monitoring of the area, any impacts on the environment from lowering the rail line are ensured to be minimised and manageable.
“The trench option for Edithvale and Bonbeach will remove two dangerous and congested level crossings and build two new stations,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne has authorised the EES for the project and it was exhibited for public consultation earlier this year.
Formal approvals for the project will be sought after - including a set of Environmental Performance Requirements which ensures the environment is protected - following the Minister’s assessment.
Minister Wynne commented: “The Level Crossing Removal Authority provided a comprehensive Environment Effects Statement, and my assessment is that the project can be built and operated with acceptable environmental outcomes.”
Removal of the level crossings and construction of two new stations at Edithvale and Bonbeach are expected to be completed by 2022, following the grant of planning and environmental approvals.
