Two shortlisted for Sydney Metro Stage 2 tunnels

Following a rigorous expression of interest period, two joint venture parties have been shortlisted to build the tunnels under Sydney Harbour and through the Central Business District as part of the Sydney Metro project

The tunnel and station excavation works are part of Stage 2 of the Sydney Metro project, a 30 kilometre extension of metro rail from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and south west to Bankstown. The rail line is due to open in 2024 with seven new metro stations and 11 upgraded stations.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the Sydney Metro project is now ready to undertake the next stage of Sydney's tunneling boom, after completing the 15km twin tunnels in the North West earlier in the year.

"The first of the giant boring machines will be in the ground before the end of 2018 for tunnelling under the harbour and through the CBD, and we’ve received interest from here and abroad from companies wanting to carry out the work," said Minister Constance.

The two groups invited to tender for the contract are:

More than 18 tunnelling and civil engineering organisations were engaged as part of industry consultation earlier this year in the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Tunnel and Station Excavation Works contract. The contract to build the tunnels will be awarded towards the middle of next year.

Transport NSW will request tenders this month from suitably qualified and experienced demolition contractors to undertake the deconstruction and demolition of approximately 60 buildings in and around Sydney, generally at future station locations on the alignment of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest.
