Two projects on the Melton Highway in Victoria are ramping up to make travel across Melbourne’s growing west easier.
In the coming weeks, crews will commence works on the Melton Highway Infill Duplication Project. This project will help make trips smoother while also reducing delays for the 23,000 vehicles that travel along the Melton highway.
This upgrade will deliver additional lanes and a new centre median between Crown Drive and The Regency to improve traffic flow and cater to the rapidly growing community.
The project will also install new safety barriers, kerbs, drainage and street lighting as well as extend and connect the existing shared use path on the south side of Melton Highway.
“By upgrading the Melton Highway, we’re ensuring safer journeys for the residents already using it every day – as well as the hundreds of thousands of residents who’ll be using it in the future.
“We know that Melton’s population is projected to increase to more than 400,000 residents by 2050 – which is why we’re delivering projects like these that will provide safer and more efficient journeys for years to come,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.
Meanwhile, crews are completing works to upgrade and align the intersection of the Melton Highway and Leakes Road in Plumpton. This project will include adding turning lanes to the intersection to improve traffic flow while new traffic lights and pedestrian facilities will be installed to allow for safer crossings.
In addition, new street lighting will be installed to improve visibility at nights, and the road will be resurfaced with new kerbing and improved drainage.
Reduced speed limits will be in place and changed conditions will be observed while travelling through the construction sites. Drivers are encouraged to obey traffic controllers and any speed signage, and to drive to conditions to keep everyone safe.
The Melton Highway and Leakes Road intersection upgrade is expected to be completed in late-2025, and the Melton Highway Infill Duplication Project will be completed by mid-2026.
“The completion of works along Melton highway is a win for all road users – ensuring better traffic flow and safer, smoother travel,” Member for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins said.
