At least $46.5 million has been invested on various Northern Queensland construction projects. Summarised below are the five upcoming and on-going construction works happening in Townsville and Palm Island.

Collectively, Townsville has up to $30 million invested for the projects listed below:

  • $9.5 million for the NRL Cowboys House which is a housing complex for students from remote communities. Construction is currently on track and is expected to be completed by December 2016, making it ready for the 2017 school year.
  • $4.9 million for two Townsville apartment projects – preliminary work has already begun on the 12 single-bed apartment project in Vincent, while works on a 10 single-bed apartment project in Rosslea is expected to be completed by March 2017.
  • $6.6 million for the expansion and refurbishment of the Townsville Hospital children’s ward. Construction will commence soon and works will include increasing the number of beds from 23 to 29 as well as the creation of an annex with various facilities and the refurbishment of the existing children’s ward.
  • $9 million has been invested to maintain the network performance as well as ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective supply of high-voltage electricity from Powerlink Queensland’s transmission network in Northern QLD. Works will include replacing 100 kilometres of earth wire from Townsville to Chalumbin Substation near Tully. 18 transmission towers will also be refitted on the transmission line to Kareeya Substation.

Palm Island, on the other hand, is investing $16.5 million for works on a primary health care facility. This project will help improve and expand health care services for palm Island residents. The facility will provide an improved access to medical services as well as provide a base for visiting specialists. The new health care facility will also offer a place for social and emotional well-being services as well as services for dental, maternal and child health.
