Updated designs have been released for the elevated rail bridge that will replace two dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road in Mentone and Parkers Road in Parkdale, Victoria.
The updated designs will not only remove these level crossings, but it will also provide two MCGs worth of open space and a new Parkdale Station.
Removing these level crossings will make the Frankston Line safer and less congested as well as enable more trains to run more often on one of Melbourne’s busiest train lines.
“We’re removing dangerous and congested level crossings across the state to improve safety for drivers, train passengers and pedestrians for years to come.
“When these level crossings are gone by 2025, Parkdale and Mentone will be safer and less congested – allowing more trains to run more often on the Frankston Line when the Metro Tunnel opens,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.
The updated designs have been shaped by feedback from the community, with the new station and open space designed to reflect Parkdale’s “local character and village feel”.
The new Parkdale Station will have a generous forecourt and gathering places that feature warm and light-toned materials like timber, granite and stone. The existing station building is going to be repurposed and located within the new station precinct while retaining its original elements as it is important to locals.
On the other hand, the new open spaces will feature trees and landscaping along with walking and cycling paths, and recreation areas such as a basketball half court, open-air gym and nature-based play areas.
The single rail bridge design for the removal of the level crossings will better connect the suburb that is currently divided by the rail line. This option will also allow more trees and landscaping to maximise the green space.
Once the new Parkdale Station opens, passengers will be able to enjoy modern and accessible facilities that are filled with natural lights. The new station will have stairs and lifts to the station platforms as well as a new station office, more lighting at night and a better CCTV system.
“We’re excited to unveil updated designs for this crucial project to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings – a great outcome for the community including businesses, drivers, pedestrians and train passengers.
“We thank the community for taking time to provide feedback, which has helped to shape the updated designs for the new Parkdale Station precinct to reflect the village feel of Parkdale,” Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson said.
To inform the final designs for the project, the designers will continue collecting valuable insights and advice from 14 community members on the Parkdale Open Space Advisory Panel.
The project team will also search for nominations for community members that want to be part of the project’s Construction Liaison Group that will be responsible for informing local communities and listening to feedback regarding issues that could arise during construction.
The community is currently encouraged to provide feedback on the updated designs. Interested parties can have their say through the Engage Victoria website or at face-to-face and virtual community information sessions beginning in mid-October.
Major construction to remove the two dangerous and congested level crossings and build the new Parkdale Station is anticipated to commence next year.
