VIC Government to invest $318m towards upgrading Barwon Heads Road

Victoria’s Barwon Heads Road is set to be duplicated and the congested level crossing near Marshall Station near Geelong to be removed, with the Victorian Government’s $318 million investment to get these projects underway.

This multi-million dollar investment will cover the duplication of four kilometres of Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road and Reserve Road - expanding the road from two to four lanes - as well as planning for the duplication of the highway to Lower Duneed Road.

The Barwon Heads Road project will also include upgrading the intersection at Settlement Road and Breakwater Road; and construction of a new intersection at Crows, Barwarre, Tannery and Reserve Roads to improve traffic flow and road safety.

To remove the dangerous and congested level crossing north of Marshall Station, a new bridge is going to be built to raise the Barwon Heads Road - which will make it safer and quicker for local motorists to get to their destinations.

Local cyclists and pedestrians will also benefit from this upgrade, with a new shared path with a safety barrier together with new street lighting, road signage and landscaping.

Once the upgrade is completed, locals will be able to experience quicker travel times and safer conditions along Barwon Heads Road.

“Anyone who uses Barwon Heads Road will know how badly this massive upgrade is needed. This will make a real difference to both local families and tourists visiting our stunning beaches during the busy summer holidays,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Planning is already underway on this project, with pre-construction works set to commence in 2019. Major construction activities on the upgrade is expected to commence in 2020 and completed by 2023.
