WA Leach Hwy-Welshpool Rd Interchange upgrade ready for construction

Following the announcement of a preferred builder in August 2020, the contract to deliver the $93 million Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange project in Western Australia has officially been awarded to the Leach Welshpool Alliance. 

The Leach Welshpool Alliance (LWA) is comprised of Georgiou Group, BG&E and Golder Associates. 

“One of our key values at Georgiou is innovation and through this model, the LWA Team worked with the client to progress a design which will deliver improved safety benefits, increased traffic capacity and considerable cost savings. 

“This is where the collaborative approach comes into its own. The combining of the client-designer and constructor jointly at an early stage in the project development process has already been able to deliver demonstrable value to our client, Main Roads WA,” Georgiou Group CEO Rob Monaci said. 

The multi-million-dollar project will include: 

  • A new bridge taking Leach Highway over Welshpool Road to create a grade-separated interchange 
  • Duplicating the existing Leach Highway bridge over the railway 
  • A shared path along Leach Highway from Sevenoaks Street to Orrong Road

Once completed, this project will support the east-west freight link between Fremantle and the Kewdale and Welshpool industrial areas. The project will also provide access to several industries and businesses in the region as well as connect the East Cannington and Queens Park residential suburbs to Victoria Park via Albany Highway. 

For the delivery of this project, the Leach Welshpool Alliance will be maximising local content through the involvement of local Welshpool businesses during the construction phase. 

Construction will commence immediately and is due to be completed in late 2022. Approximately 130 jobs are expected to be supported at peak construction period.
