Want to rank better in search? SEO Series Part 1

Monica Gameng   |   February 22, 2016

In June of 2015, there were roughly 12.8 million internet users in Australia. And as mobile technology spreads to the construction industry, it's become a pretty smart idea to take your business online.

Let's say someone is starting a new project in Sydney and needs to hire a grader. What would they do to figure this out on their own? Odds are, they're probably going to head online and enter their request into a search engine like Google. And they'll be specific in that search. They might type in "grader hire sydney". Screen_Shot_2016-02-16_at_4.50.50_pm.png

Google gets billions of searches every day, from people who have questions and problems they're looking to solve.

So search engines need to provide the most relevant, useful, and trustworthy answers. To find them, they send what are known as “spiders” to crawl through all of the pages on the web, searching for that content.

Those spiders try to figure out what each page is about.

From that data, they create a list of results that are relevant and useful to searches. Then, they rank those results based on many different factors, including things like the website's performance, the person who's searching and authority of those websites. The higher it ranks, more visits a website gets.

This ranking is what you see when you look at a search engine results page. The first few results and the ones listed on the side are ads - websites that have paid to show up at the top. But below that, you’re looking at the top 1-10 unpaid, or “organic”, results that contain the most popular, relevant answers.

In the video below, the relationship between search engines and SEO strategies is further explained.

As business owners, your goal is to be listed in the top organic results because over 50 percent of searchers click on the first three organic results they see. So how do you get your business listed up there?

That is where SEO come in. You need to figure out what your prospects are searching for, so that you can make sure that they find your website.

In the next blog post of our SEO series, we're going to focus on how keywords affect SEO and tips to start increasing your traffic to your website. Stay tuned.
