The proposed Subi East redevelopment in Western Australia is one step closer to becoming a reality with the State Government approving the business case for the project as well as the commitment of about $227 million towards the development of a new inner-city hub in Perth.
“Perth needs these kinds of projects that breathe new life into existing areas, attract more people to visit and create thousands of local jobs.
“Subiaco has always been a great place to work, live and visit - the addition of Subi East and Bob Hawke College will build on this success to ensure generations enjoy it for years to come,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
The multi-million investment includes $193 million towards the development of the project in addition to the $34 million already allocated for the demolition of the Subiaco oval.
The redevelopment is going to be split into two key areas - the retained Subiaco Oval playing surface and the old Princess Margaret Hospital.
The Subi East project is anticipated to deliver over 2,000 new dwellings around the Subiaco Oval and Princess Margaret Hospital precincts, which is located near public transport and in line with the METRONET policy.
This development is also expected to support 2,700 jobs during its construction as well as 650 new jobs in Subiaco once Subi East is up and running.
Demolition of the old Princess Margaret Hospital is anticipated to begin in 2021, subject to project requirements and further site investigations.
The approval of the business case and the funding allocation will pave the way for the development of a master plan for Subi East as well as open more opportunities for community consultation that will focus on the project’s urban design, including heritage and cultural elements, landscape design and public spaces.
“The focus can progress towards master planning, and we look forward to seeing this vibrant, connected new community take shape on the doorstep of the Perth CBD.
“Subi East will deliver quality new public assets and community spaces, including unlocking Subi Oval for shared community use and the creation of an existing new precinct that will leverage existing public transport infrastructure,” Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said.
Majority of the demolition works on Subiaco Oval is due to be completed in time for the opening of Bob Hawke College in early-2020.
Demolition is expected to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of concrete and other materials, with about 95 per cent to be reused for road base.
