Watpac wins $49m contract to deliver new University of Melbourne student housing

Watpac Limited has been appointed to build a new student accommodation building for Cedar Pacific at Carlton, Victoria. For this project, Watpac has been awarded a $49 million contract.

“Cedar Pacific is thrilled to have the experience in student accommodation and urban construction that Watpac brings to this innovative project,” Cedar Pacific Chief Executive Officer Bernie Armstrong said.

The new 13-storey building is going to be located on 123 - 135 Bouverie Street student accommodation centre in Carlton, and it is going to be operated by UniLodge once construction is completed.

The new accommodation building is going to be home to up to 648 University of Melbourne students, with a mix of ensuited as well as small and large dormitory rooms offered. The building will also have accessible rooms for mobility, vision and hearing impaired students.

This purpose-built facility will feature meeting lounges, a sky lounge, shared kitchens as well as dining areas and a gymnasium.

“With the project designed to achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating and sustainability features including water harvesting for re-use, passive thermal design and roof top photovoltaic cells, the Watpac team will draw on their expertise in this important area to deliver a project that meets its sustainability targets,” Watpac Construction Victoria State manager Nick Pavlovic said.

In addition to the construction of the student accommodation, Watpac will also undertake refurbishment works on the adjacent heritage building the Art Deco, former Modern Printing Company Factory which will be incorporated into the new development together with a ground level private outdoor space, mid-rise roof terrace and upper roof terrace that will give students more lounge, barbecue areas and kitchen facilities.

The new student accommodation building is expected to be completed by July 2019, with approximately 150 jobs generated during peak construction.
