West Melbourne roads and public spaces to get $100m worth of upgrades

West Melbourne local roads and public spaces are set to be revitalised with the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne teaming up to deliver a $100 million package of works that will upgrade streetscapes in this region.

The improved traffic flow and public space delivered through this expanded West Gate Tunnel Master Plan will be rolled out together with new parklands in Moonee Ponds Creek, while the West Gate Tunnel and other major transport projects are also being delivered.

With the West Gate Tunnel project set to extend Wurundjeri Way, a new city bypass will be created that will take thousands of vehicles off of the streets of the CBD.

“This partnership with Melbourne City Council will revitalise public space and improve traffic flow in West Melbourne while we get on with the West Gate Tunnel,” Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

The City of Melbourne and Transport for Victoria will be conducting a joint study to identify the improvements needed to make the most out of the changes coming with the streetscape upgrade package.

This study will be looking at improving areas including Spencer, King and William streets as well as the Arden Street precinct, north and West Melbourne traffic, and access from North Melbourne to the Docklands.

The new Moonee Ponds Creek parkland and open space included in the $100 million project is set to provide improved recreational areas, with the expanded Master Plan mapping out how the catchment can be best utilised and how its full potential can be reached as a vital biodiversity and recreational corridor.

“Through this partnership we will see enhanced streetscapes rolled out across important roads in West Melbourne while also creating an improved Moonee Ponds Creek for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Lord Mayor Sally Capp said.

Together with this package of works, the State Government has also announced an $11 million investment for community upgrades to the inner west.

This $100 million package of works is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne, with each providing $50 million.
