Works have commenced on an 80-metre long road bridge over the Patterson River, marking the beginning of construction on the massive $588 million project that will remove four more congested and dangerous level crossings in Victoria.
Once the new Patterson River Road Bridge is completed, it will connect Bonbeach to Carrum via Station Street for the first time. It will also provide a safer as well as a more direct route for local traffic.
The new bridge will feature new walking and cycling paths that will provide safer access to the new Carrum Station, the beach, Patterson River and surrounding suburbs.
Demolition is already underway on the old pedestrian bridge, with piling works for the foundation of the new road bridge to begin next month.
During the construction of the new bridge, fishing and resident access are going to be maintained along the Patterson River paths – up to the work site at Launching Way – with detours along the Nepean Highway in order to ensure pedestrians and cyclists can pass the area safely.
The new Patterson River Road Bridge is expected to open for public use by the end of 2018.
“I thank people for their patience and support while we build the new road bridge. We will continue to work closely with residents, traders and boat users to minimise disruption in the local area as much as possible,” Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny said.

Further along the Frankston Line, works are underway to prepare for major construction in April on the Seaford Road level crossing removal.
This level crossing removal project – which is part of the $2 billion Frankston Line project – is going to be delivered by a consortium comprising of Lendlease, Acciona Coleman and WSP; and it is expected to support up to 400 jobs during the construction phase.
