Work begins on $615m Gawler Rail Line upgrade in SA

Construction is now underway on the electrification and modernisation of South Australia’s Gawler Rail Line and the $615 million project is anticipated to deliver up to 250 jobs a year during the delivery phase.

Accommodating up to 21,000 of the estimated 60,000 train commuters each day, the Gawler Rail Line is Adelaide’s most used rail line.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack, about 15 electric trains will be servicing the Gawler Rail Line once it is operational and there would be an increase of 15 per cent in capacity during peak periods.

“An electrified Gawler line with clean and green high-performance trains will deliver an improved commuter experience, with better reliability and safety.

“This project is yet another investment in improved public transport to deliver faster, safer, more reliable and comfortable services for the people of South Australia, whilst promoting economic growth throughout its construction,” Mr McCormack said.

This multi-million dollar project is part of the State Government’s $11.9 billion investment in infrastructure works to be delivered over the next four years.

“Importantly, this project will support job growth and deliver better services for the people of the Northern suburbs,” Premier Steven Marshall said.

Scope of works of the project include:

  • Electrification of the Gawler Rail Line and Dry Creek Railcar Depot
  • Pedestrian level crossing enhancements
  • Acquisition of additional three-car electric trains (introduced in stages following completion of the electrification works)
  • New signalling system
  • Fencing of the rail corridor for improved safety

“Once complete, the electrified line will provide a more modern, environmentally friendly and efficient train service that will encourage more people to leave the car at home and take public transport.

“This additional capacity will also support a host of housing, commercial and business developments underway or touted to begin in and around our northern suburbs,” Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said.

Lendlease will be delivering this project and the contractor has established NorthHub - an employment, skills and training centre that will connect job seekers with various opportunities on the Gawler Rail Line Electrification Project.

In addition, Bombardier Transportation has been appointed to build the new electric trains.

Works will begin with the installation of a Common Service Trench that can accommodate the new signalling system and will be followed by the construction of concrete footings that will support the overhead wiring mast. The project is due for completion in 2021.

The Gawler Rail Line Electrification Project is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Government - each contributing $220 million - with an additional $175 million from the State Government to purchase additional electric trains.
