Work begins to prepare Mac Point Stadium site for major construction

The new Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium in Tasmania has marked another milestone as it progresses through the delivery phase, with preparatory works now underway on site.

Following a competitive procurement process, Hazell Bros was chosen to undertake bulk earthworks on one of the State’s largest and most significant infrastructure projects.

“Today marks another important milestone as we continue turning the vision for Macquarie Point into a reality.

“The diggers have arrived, the builders are here, and we are getting on with the job.

“Through our 2030 Strong for Tasmania’s Future, we are delivering this once-in-a-generation project.

“It will support thousands of jobs, inject billions into our economy and create a precinct that all Tasmanians can be proud of.

“These critical works are being delivered by Hazell Bros, a highly respected Tasmanian company with decades of experience delivering major infrastructure projects across our state,” Premier of Tasmania Jeremy Rockliff said.

Works to prepare the site for stadium construction will be carried out until mid-2027, which will include bulk excavation of about 100,000 cubic metres of soil, site preparation and archeological investigations.

Procurement is also progressing for the main stadium construction, with a tender already out to market. The successful contractor is set to be appointed at the end of the year.

The delivery of the new Multipurpose Stadium is part of the most transformative urban renewal projects to be undertaken in Tasmania’s history, with the Macquarie Point Precinct set to unlock a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reconnect Hobart’s CBD with the waterfront. The precinct master plan will also create a vibrant destination for both Tasmanians and visitors.

“These preparatory works are an exciting first step as we prepare for activity to increase.

“The precinct will become one of Australia’s great waterfront urban renewal projects, delivering improved public spaces, stronger connections to the city and waterfront, and of course, our stadium.

“These will drive new opportunities for investment, business, housing and tourism – all key pillars for our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

“Every milestone brings us closer to creating a precinct that will deliver lasting economic activity and benefits for Tasmania,” TAS Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Eric Abetz said.

The Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium is a foundational development for the precinct and it is anticipated to support thousands of jobs during construction, creating a lasting economic benefit through a boost in tourism, business investment and major events while, at the same time, providing long-term community infrastructure for future generations.

The concept design for the stadium includes:

• A 1,500-person function room with views to kunanyi/Mount Wellington
• A design informed by modelling cricket ball trajectory data to ensure we are ready to host the best quality cricket games
• A stage pocket in the northern stand to support concerts and events, which will minimise impact on the field and reduce costs for event operators
• Easy to follow and accessible design features – including a single continuous concourse that services the whole stadium, which means you can enter any gate and easily find your seat
• A seating bowl design that will bring crowds closer to the action
• Separated back of house and catering facilities with a below ground service road to separate vehicles and stadium visitors and users
• A carefully designed cutting-edge design including a timber and steel framed fixed ETFE transparent roof, which will see Tasmania leading the world in structured timber roofing solutions

“Projects of this scale create jobs, support local businesses and serve as a legacy for communities,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said.

“The Federal Government’s $240 million contribution to the Macquarie Point Precinct is all about delivering better public spaces, housing, commercial activity, cultural users and major events.
