The BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has awarded two contracts to Civmec Limited in mid-December 2020 for works at the Hay Point Coal Terminal in Central Queensland.

The first contract is for the fabrication, modularisation and commissioning of the 1,800-tonne SL2A ship loader at the Hay point facility. This contract involves supply and assembly of the complete ship loader as well as the no-load commissioning.

The large material handling equipment is going to be fabricated at Civmec’s Henderson manufacturing facility in Western Australia and assembled at the company’s new Assembly Hall. From the assembly facility, the equipment will be delivered Free Along Side (FAS) to the Australian Marine Complex Wharf and loaded onto a heavy lift ship

Works under this contract is due to be completed in the second half of 2022 and Civmec is estimating to employ up to 150 workers in Perth for this project.

The second contract awarded by BMA is for the manufacturing of more than 13,500 tonnes of wharf girders as well as associated structures for the development of port infrastructure at Hay Point.

Scope of works under this contract includes supply. Fabrication, surface treatment and assembly of girders and associated structures. Procurement and shop detailing works will commence immediately while fabrication will begin by the fourth quarter of the 2021 financial year.

Loadout of the girders is scheduled to begin in early 2022, with the last Heavy Lift Vessel to load out in the last quarter of the 2022 financial year.

Civmec is estimating to employ up to 350 workers during the fabrication and assembly stages at its Henderson facility.

“The award for the Hay Point port infrastructure work is the second significant package of works that we have been trusted to deliver for this port upgrade. We look forward to delivering high-quality product to McConnell Dowell to allow them to have a seamless installation at the site location and welcome the opportunity to work alongside all stakeholders on this project,” Civmec Limited Chief Executive Officer Patrick Tallon said.

The Hay Point Coal Terminal is located approximately 40 kilometres south of Mackay in Central Queensland.

In March of last year, BMA has signed McConnell Dowell to undertake the delivery of the upgrades to the Hay Point facility. You can read more about it here.
