Works begin on $22.1m safety upgrades on Bruce Highway at Bluewater QLD

Safety upgrades are now underway on the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Ingham, with works commencing on the $22.1 million package of works at Bluewater - approximately 30 kilometres north of Townsville.

This project is part of the Queensland Government’s initiative to improve safety and efficiency on the Bruce Highway for all motorists travelling between Brisbane and Cairns.

The multi-million package of works will include $6.1 million to build a new southbound overtaking lane between Two Mile Creek and Sleeper Log Creek. This project is part of the Australian Government’s $275 million Bruce Highway Overtaking Lanes Package.

“Creating safer overtaking opportunities is part of the Government’s strategy to save lives and reduce road trauma on the Bruce Highway,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said.

The remaining $16 million for safety upgrades at Bluewater is being funded under the Bruce Highway Safety Package. Scope of works will include road widening, installation of wide centre line treatments as well as safety improvements at the intersections in Bluewater Station Road, Forestry Road and Toolakea Beach Road.

These projects are expected to support up to 60 jobs during construction.

“The Bruce Highway is one of Queensland’s most important transport corridors, which is why we’re delivering a $12.6 billion program together with the Australian Government to increase capacity and improve safety.

“This is a win for local industry and the thousands of motorists who use this stretch every day, as well as a boost for the region’s economy with support for valuable construction jobs,” Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.

The safety upgrades are expected to be completed by late 2020, weather permitting.
