Works begin on new Stapley Drive Bridge on QLD's M1 Pacific Motorway

Queensland’s congestion-busting M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes marks a new project milestone with works commencing to replace the old Stapley Drive Bridge.

“It will provide better connections for motorists travelling over the motorway between Reedy Creek and Varsity Lakes.

“The new bridge will be a significant improvement on the old bridge, which featured only one westbound and two eastbound lanes for motorists,” Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

Demolition of the old bridge will ramp up over the coming weeks and excavators will gradually “crunch down” the bridge. Once demolition is completed, piling works will begin to build the foundation of the new Stapley Drive Bridge.

“This project is part of our commitment to build a better M1 and it’s exciting to see the progress being made for Gold Coast motorists.

“We appreciate the community’s ongoing patience during these works, which are being conducted within a very busy environment,” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.

This upgrade is anticipated to support up to 321 jobs during its construction and the new Stapley Drive Bridge is due to open to traffic by mid-2020.

A number of temporary traffic changes will take effect while works are ongoing to deliver upgrades to the M1 Pacific Motorway, which you can check out on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website here.

This project is part of the M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrade Program - Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes which is jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments, each contributing $97.3 million and $110 million respectively.
