Works begin on new Underwood Road bridge on QLD M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrade

Major construction work on a new Underwood Road bridge in Queensland is set to commence, with piling works now underway to mark this important milestone on the $190 million M1/M3 Gateway Merge project - which is part of the Pacific Motorway Upgrade.

“We started early works on this task with the safety upgrading to the Underwood Road intersection last year, and that realignment fits the new bridgeworks to the north of the existing bridge and should open to traffic in late 2019,” Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said.

Works under the M1/M3 Gateway Merge project include:

  • Up to five southbound lanes on the Pacific Motorway between Eight Mile Plains and Rochedale South
  • Relocating the existing bus entry from the Eight Mile Plains Bus Station onto the Pacific Motorway
  • Replacing the Underwood Road bridge to a new four lane overpass
  • Managing motorway technologies from Klumpp Road to Rochedale Road

“This new expansion on Underwood Road and the M1 and M3 will make it faster and safer for Logan families to get to where they need to be.

“The Eight Mile Plains Bus Station entry will also be moved ensuring less congestion and easier access,” Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman said.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said that the M1/M3 Gateway Merge is just one of the four major projects that will improve the M1. Other projects include the $749 million upgrade between Eight Mile Plains and Daisy Hill; the $1.030 billion upgrade between Varsity Lakes and Tugun; and the $197.5 million upgrade between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes.

Mr Bailey added that works on the M1 are going to be carried out during the day, with some night works to avoid clashes with peak commuting hours.

“I ask motorists to stick to sign posted speed limit changes around roadworks to ensure the safety of other motorists and workers,” Mr Bailey said.

The M1/M3 Gateway Merge is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, with the Australian Government contributing $115 million towards the project and the remaining balance to be provided by the State Government.

In October of last year, Lendlease was awarded the contract to build the M1/M3 Gateway Merge project.

This project is due to be completed in mid-2020, and it was expected to support up to 131 jobs during construction.
