The delivery of the Darwin Ship Lift Facility is providing a major boost in the local Northern Territory economy as the project’s main contractor – the Clough BMD Joint Venture – awards $58.8 million worth of works to local businesses.

This reflects the project team’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the new ship lift facility are felt throughout the Territory.

Through its local-first approach, the joint venture is helping drive a positive impact across the Northern Territory through the creation of jobs and business opportunities. And as they work closely with the Northern Territory Government, the Clough BMD Joint Venture remains focused on providing opportunities for Territorians to build stronger and more sustainable businesses through the project now and into the future.

“The Clough BMD Joint Venture is proud to support local businesses and communities through our commitment to local procurement. Together, we’re building a stronger future for the Northern Territory,” the joint venture said in a statement.

To date, the project has marked significant achievements including the awarding of one of the largest subcontractor contracts to Wilga Indigenous Corporation – a $16.9 million contract to supply 430,000 tonnes of rock for construction. This proud Northern Territory Indigenous-owned corporation is dedicated to sustainable practices as well as community collaboration and economic empowerment.

Additional subcontracting works have also been awarded including surveying, geotechnical services, maintenance, traffic control, construction equipment and civil construction services.

Procurement wins for the Darwin Ship Lift Facility project include:

  • 21 employees on the project identifying as Indigenous
  • 12 subcontracts have been awarded to Indigenous enterprises
  • 58 per cent of the workforce are Territory locals

Owned by the Northern Territory Government, the new ship lift facility will help establish Darwin as a key maritime maintenance centre in northern Australia. It will provide services such as wet and dry berths for vessel wash down, blasting, painting and general maintenance facilities on a common user basis to the defence, energy, pearling, fishing and coastal cruising sectors.

The multi-million-dollar project will deliver:

  • A ship lift 26 metres wide, 103 metres long with a vessel lifting capability of 5,500 tonnes
  • Wet berths to allow vessels to undertake in-water maintenance
  • Hard stand areas for ship repair and maintenance works
  • Self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) units that transport the ships around the facility once they are out of the water
  • An administration building, SPMT shed and Blast and Paint Facility
  • East Arm utilities upgrades to support the ship lift and broader marine industry park development

The Darwin Ship Lift Facility is funded by $215 million from the Northern Territory Government alongside a concessional loan of up to $300 million from the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).
