Progress on the $8 million Gawler Place Upgrade in Adelaide, South Australia is moving forward with pre-construction works completed and major construction activities are expected to commence shortly.

The upgrade on Gawler Place - from North Terrace to Grenfell Street - will deliver a high-quality street that will connect to Rundle Mall, Adelaide’s premier shopping spot.

This multi-million dollar redevelopment will transform Gawler Place into a shared-use space for walking, cycling and driving that will have wider and improved footpaths as well as better lighting and additional bicycle parking.

The upgraded Gawler Place will also have spaces for events and performances together with seating and outdoor dining spaces for meetings, gatherings or just to enjoy the city.

Other features that the upgrade will deliver will include greening elements such as mature trees, understory planting and climbers as well as smart elements that include charging points, bins and feature lighting.

Elements such as vehicle access, on-street parking and loading areas for deliveries to Rundle Mall and the street are going to be maintained as part of the upgrade.

According to Lord mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese, Gawler Place caters to more than 16,000 people at the southern section and more than 9,500 people at the northern section on a daily basis, making it one of the city’s busiest streets.

“The Gawler Place upgrade will create an attractive, safe and welcoming pedestrian-friendly extension of Rundle Mall.

“It will also support business growth and investment. Widened footpaths will create a high-quality space for retail, shopping and activity, and shade and plants will encourage outdoor dining,” Mr Haese said.

The appointment of a managing contractor for the upgrade is currently in progress, according to the project’s web page.

The upgrade on Gawler Place is due to be completed by August 2019.
