Works progress at Tottenham as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1
The $4.1 billion Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 continues to progress as preparatory works to rebuild the Ashley Street rail bridge and construct a new Tottenham Station begins.
The new Tottenham Station is going to be built 20 metres north of its current location to make space for realigned Sunbury Line tracks. The station precinct will feature a new, wide underpass that is separated from Ashley Street, with entrances on Rupert Street and Sunshine Road, and lift and stair access to the platforms.
The underpass will enable passengers to access the station as well as both sides of the rail corridor without having to use the pedestrian path on Ashley Street.
Crews are now completing assessments of the existing bridge, taking ground and soil samples while locating utilities in the rail corridor and under Ashley Street.
These works follow site investigations at the Tottenham Freight Yards in May to prepare for the realignment of tracks, which will permanently separate metro, regional and freight trains at Sunshine.
The overall Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 – West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade include:
- Turning Sunshine Station into a superhub
- Two new rail bridges
- One new rail underpass
- New and upgraded tracks
- New signalling technology
- Realigned passenger and freight lines
- A new modern and accessible Tottenham Station and Albion Station
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 is due to be completed in 2030.
Last month, early designs were released to give the public a first look of the new Tottenham and Albion stations.
