The Victorian Government has invested $300 million for the Mordialloc Bypass, with geotechnical investigations underway at the Waterways estate wetlands.
“The Andrews Labor Government is building the Mordialloc Bypass to improve travel times, boost reliability and improve safety for motorists from some of Melbourne’s fastest growing suburbs.
“These geotechnical investigations are an important step in the planning process before building the bypass, which will slash congestion and take trucks off local roads,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan.
The Mordialloc Bypass project will include a new 9-kilometre road link from the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Aspendale Gardens up to the Dingley Bypass.
As part of the geotechnical investigations, five 35 to 50-metre deep boreholes will be drilled at potential bridge pier locations along the wetlands area near the Waterways estate, helping gather information for the design of the overpass over Springvale Road and the Mordialloc Creek wetlands.
VicRoads will also be undertaking ecological investigations, in addition to the geotechnical investigations, which will help minimise potential impacts to the wetlands as well as the habitats.
“Building the Mordialloc Bypass requires careful planning including flora, fauna and heritage studies, traffic modelling and community consultation to help ensure we get the final design right,” said Member for Keysborough Martin Pakula.
This multi-million dollar project will help ease congestion for Melbourne’s bayside suburbs by constructing an overpass which will separate the busy Springvale Road intersection. Traffic signals will also be installed at other intersections, improving traffic flow and safety. A shared pedestrian and cycling path will be built along the full length of the bypass route.
Local business owners, residents as well as motorists will be asked to provide feedback and comments over the coming months on the concept design for the project, which will help shape the final design of the bypass.
“The south east is one of the fastest growing communities and motorists are increasingly facing unacceptable delays and that’s why we’re building the Mordialloc Bypass to make it faster and easier to get where you need to go,” said Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke.
Construction is expected to begin by mid 2019 and be completed by late 2021.
