Major reconstruction works on Gillies Range Road in Far North Queensland are now underway on sections that have been damaged by the Tropical Cyclone Jasper as well as the severe flooding that followed.

This $50.7 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Repairs will be carried out across 19 damaged sites along the range, including a number of substantial landslips, to restore the road to its pre-cyclone state.

Key stabilisation measures to be delivered include:

  • Strengthening slopes to prevent erosion and landslides
  • Installing advanced soil anchoring systems for enhanced stability
  • Constructing durable rock and concrete retaining walls

“Addressing the widespread damage caused by multiple landslips is a massive undertaking and these works mark a major milestone in the North’s recovery.

“This reconstruction is about supporting recovery for communities across Far North Queensland following Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

“The Albanese Government will continue to work closely with the Queensland Government to ensure communities are supported throughout the recovery period,” Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said.

Additional works such as resurfacing damaged sections of the road, repairing culverts, restoring drainage systems, and replacing or fixing road signs and barriers will also be carried out.

Slip repairs near Lake Barrie were completed in 2025, and the reconstruction of Gillies Range Road will continue until mid-2027, weather and site condition permitting.

Koppen Development Pty Ltd is undertaking the reconstruction works.

“These range roads are vital for local communities, freight and tourism across Far North Queensland.

“We’ve carefully coordinated works across all range roads to maintain safe and reliable access while this essential reconstruction is carried out.

“We thank North Queenslanders for their patience as we deliver long-term repair works to restore safety and reliability on the road,” QLD Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said.
