Victoria’s $375 million Mordialloc Freeway project progresses towards construction with the release of an Environment Effects Statement (EES) for public consultation. Locals are invited to share their feedback regarding the project.
“Locals have told us they want this new link - and now they’ve got the chance to be involved in feedback on how we build the best Mordialloc Freeway,” Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson said.
The EES documents released states that the project is expected to help save travel times of more than 10 minutes when travelling between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and the Dingley Bypass.
The Mordialloc Freeway is set to remove up to 13,000 trucks from the nearby local and arterial roads each day. This gives back the local road network to the local communities from Aspendale Gardens to Dingley Village and beyond.
“The EES confirms that the Mordialloc Freeway will take trucks off residential streets, slash travel times and protect the health of the community,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said.
This multi-million dollar project will include:
- Bridges over Springvale Road, Governor Road, Lower Dandenong Road and Centre Dandenong Road, including four new freeway interchanges with entry and exit ramps
- Bridges over Old Dandenong Road and the sensitive waterways area, with traffic lights connecting the freeway to Dingley Bypass
- Upgrades to the existing interchange at Thames Promenade, Chelsea, with the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to provide freeway entry and exit ramps
- A new separate shared walking and cycling path along the entire length of the freeway
This project will also include construction of noise walls along Mordialloc Freeway to help reduce vehicle noise near residential areas such as in Dingley Village, Aspendale Gardens and Waterways.
Wildlife underpasses will be built as well to provide wildlife with access to both sides of the freeway together with fauna fencing that will help prevent animals from walking onto the road. The fencing will also help reduce the impact of light as well as noise on wildlife in Braeside Park.
“We’re continuing to improve the Mordialloc Freeway by including new noise walls, wildlife underpasses and implementing no-go construction zones to protect the environment while this vital connection is being built,” Member for Keysborough Martin Pakula said.
In May of this year, two joint ventures were shortlisted to tender for the construction of the Mordialloc Freeway. The two consortia are the CPB Contractors - Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and the McConnell Dowell - Decmil Joint Venture. The winning consortium is anticipated to be announced in early 2019.
Construction on the Mordialloc Freeway is expected to commence in 2019 and is due to be completed by the end of 2021.
