Two large-scale battery storage with a combined capacity of 55MW are going to be built in Victoria, with the projects jointly funded by the State Government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) – each investing $25 million.

The first project is going to be a 25MW battery storage that is located near Kerang. This battery is going to be integrated with the Gannawarra Solar Farm, and it will store the generated renewable energy from the solar farm.

This project is being developed by Edify Energy, with RCR Tomlinson to undertake the engineering, procurement and construction of the balance plant. RCR’s scope of works will include the installation, testing as well as connection of the harmonic filters and the state-of-the-art Tesla battery system.

“This battery energy storage system will be integrated with the 50MWac Gannawarra Solar Farm currently under construction by RCR and demonstrates the potential for integrating large-scale battery storage systems with solar,” RCR Tomlinson Managing Director & CEO Dr Paul Dalgleish said.

The second battery storage project is going to be built near Ballarat and is going to be directly connected to a vital grid intersection at a substation in Warrenheip. The 30MW battery storage is going to be supplied by Fluence and owned by AusNet Services.

Once completed, these projects will be able to provide back-up power as well as grid-stabilisation functions that are vital to maintaining an affordable and a reliable power supply for the State.

Construction has already commenced, with both projects expected to be operational in time for the coming summer peak.
