A $7 billion expansion plan has been announced for North Melbourne’s Arden precinct. Development is going to be carried out over the next 30 years and the precinct is expected to be home to at least 15,000 people as well as 34,000 jobs.
The draft plans released by the Andrews Labor Government highlights the creation of a new commercial and residential precinct across 56 hectares between Macaulay Road, Dryburgh Street and the Upfield rail line in North Melbourne. The new Metro Tunnel underground train station will be located right at the heart of area which is one stop away from Parkville as well as the CBD and Melbourne’s booming west.
North Melbourne’s industrial history will be retained while the development progresses over the course of 30 years. A heritage overlay is already in place which will protect North Melbourne’s character and historic buildings.
The draft plans include a vision for changing land uses, street and open space design, an access for cyclists and pedestrians as well as the revitalisation of Moonee Ponds Creek. This draft vision and framework was created by the Victorian Planning Authority with the City of Melbourne while the council is working on Macaulay.
